Salt Hollows

Realm Beneath the Drowned World

A trench beneath the surface of a black ocean, filled with lightless temples, drifting wreckage, and dream-currents. Movement is slow, speech echoes backward, and reality drowns over time. There are no stars, but the sea sings in voices of the long-forgotten.

Some at the FDG believe the The Salt Hollows represents the remnants of the Old World that did not manage to escape the Great Flood described in the book of Genesis. As such the Salt Hollows may be less connected with the rest of Faylinn but more closely related to our own world. As climate change becomes more of a problem and sea levels continue to rise, it may be that openings between our world and the Salt Hollows become more frequent. Nobody knows what the consequences of this may be, but all agree that it will not be good for mankind.

Those lost to the Salt Hollows are usually taken from coastal areas. Some victims may just be those with a long association with the sea even though they may be far from it when taken. However, all are taken nearby water of some sort.

From interviews with survivors it seems that there may be some truth in the old tales of mermaids and selkies. It seems that many of the inhabitants of the Salt Hollows need mankind in order to reproduce and fairy stories of men or women being lured into the waves by beautiful mer-people may not be entirely fictional. On the other hand, they may just enjoy playing with people and watching them drown – rather like Orcas enjoy slowly killing and torturing seals.

Openings to the Salt Hollows are often accompanied by unexpected whale or dolphin beachings, strange creatures being washed up on shores, or forgotten shipwrecks suddenly surfacing. Strange artefacts are sometimes washed up after storms.

Those who do manage to return often still have yearnings to return to the water, and it has been advised to try to rehabilitate these people as far from the sea as possible. The fae inhabitants of the Salt Hollows have been found to be the most determined to try to recover those who have escaped, often by entering their dreams and minds. Those who manage to resist this are sometimes found drowned in their beds, their lungs filled with seawater even when many miles from the coast.
