Mourning Mistletoe

Classification: Parasite of Sorrow
Location: Grows only on dead trees that were once beloved

Description:
Grey-green and veined with deep violet, this parasitic mistletoe produces waxy black berries that weep brine when touched. Found hanging like nooses from branches.

Properties:
Absorbs ambient grief and yearning, especially of those who have recently lost a loved one. Touching it causes tears and involuntary visions of the lost.

Lore:
Said to sprout when someone dies waiting for another’s return. In fae superstition, it’s used to mourn those who were taken rather than killed.

Uses:
The berries can be crushed into an oil of farewell, used to sever emotional bonds, helpful in exorcism or post-possession rites.

Warning:
Ingesting a berry binds your grief to the tree, allowing fae or spirits to feed on it across seasons. The grief never truly ends.
