The Guiltjaw Snare

Classification: Sentient Trap Object
Material: Ash-Weep Bloom vines, bog-bleached jawbone (species unknown)

Recovered: Coiled beneath a dead child’s cot in a vanished village near Mirecourt’s border. The cot was carved from church pews.

Description:
A circular snare of black vine threaded through a cracked jawbone. When placed under a bed, in a doorway, or across a path, it tightens if someone crosses with unspoken guilt. The jawbone’s teeth bite down slowly.

Properties:

  • Activates only for the guilty—defined broadly and not necessarily morally
  • Victims are often found with emotional memories missing or altered
  • Once sprung, the vine “sings” in a voice known to the victim—usually a dead loved one

Known Usage:
Believed to be part of Mirecourt’s judgment rites—used to determine if a petitioner is safe to enter.

Warning:
Once triggered, the snare cannot be removed until the victim confesses something they swore never to speak. The jaw tightens until it breaks either silence or bone.
