The Drowned Candle

Object Class: Mirecourt Relic — Dream-Linked, Memory-Affecting
Containment Level: Moderate Risk
Status: Contained — Salted Glass Vessel | Vault Section M3

Description:
A small, sea-washed candle approximately 8 cm in height. Wax is pale green with a slight translucence, resembling seaglass. Its surface is entwined with strands of preserved marsh moss. The candle remains perpetually damp to the touch and emits a faint briny odour.

When lit, it produces no visible flame in the waking world. However, any nearby reflective surface (mirror, water, glass) will display a soft flickering light, inconsistent with ambient sources.

Anomalous Properties:

  • Dream Activation:
If placed within 1 metre of a sleeping subject’s head, the candle “burns” in their dreams. Subjects often report encounters with deceased or vanished individuals—typically close relatives. These entities appear unable to speak or touch the dreamer, creating intense emotional responses and disrupted REM cycles.
  • Memory Loss Trigger:
Attempting to snuff out the candle, whether physically or within the dream, results in the erasure of a core personal memory. Losses recorded include names of family members, faces of partners, and formative emotional events. No recovery has yet proven possible.

Recovery Notes:
Discovered in 2011 behind a false panel in a disused coastal chapel near Allhallows, Isle of Grain. Cabinet bore Mirecourt warding nails and remnants of eel-skin bindings, suggesting deliberate long-term containment. Initial access triggered a minor flood event within the chapel nave.

Current Containment:
Stored within a salt-lined, hermetically sealed glass vessel in Vault M3. Access restricted to Level 3 personnel or higher. Following Incident H-113-Null (see below), handling protocols now require dual-observer presence and non-reflective containment rooms.

Incident Log H-113-Null:
Intern [REDACTED] initiated unauthorized testing during inventory week. Candle was found beside the subject’s bunk the following morning. Subject retained basic motor function but exhibited complete personal identity loss — no recollection of name, origin, or language. Now classified as non-communicative.
