Classification: Bioluminescent Root-Fungus
Location: Found hanging like fruit from the exposed roots of dead trees
Description:
A pale, gourd-like fungus that glows with a greenish-gold light. Each one is hollow and light enough to float for a few seconds if tossed. They always grow in clusters of thirteen.
Properties:
Witch’s Lanterns illuminate things hidden—old bones, buried truth, disguised tracks. But they only reveal what the bearer does not wish to see.
Lore:
Carried by the old marsh-witches of Mirecourt on their belts. Legend says they are birthed from lies left too long unspoken.
Uses:
Used in ritual detection rites, or ground into powder to create an ink that shows invisible writing. The light can only be harvested once and fades permanently after first use.
Warning:
Burning a Witch’s Lantern releases toxic hallucinations, often involving the bearer’s greatest fear.
