Category: Threshold Instrument — Resonant Detection / Entity Summoning
Origin: Marsh-Aligned Veil Tool, Child-Altered
Status: Contained — Vault D, Threshold Detection Subsection
Description:
A handmade talisman constructed from two thin sticks, each wrapped tightly with reed-fibre and eel-skin strips. Suspended between them are five bird bones, each no longer than 4 cm, strung with gut-thread and spaced irregularly. Bones identified as belonging to sparrow, swift, and wren—species often used in protective folklore rites.
When spun between the hands or suspended and turned, the object emits a low hum, with frequency changes dependent on location and proximity to fae-associated energy fields.
Recovery Notes:
Discovered buried at the bottom of a toy chest belonging to one of the Allhallows missing girls (Case Ref: 1973-MR-All/3). The talisman was not listed in initial belongings but later appeared during a routine property audit.
The child’s surviving younger brother reportedly said:
“It sings when the bad ones come.”
The boy was five at the time and has since relocated under Institute-advised anonymity.
Function and Believed Use:
- Veil Detection Tool:
Designed to detect thin places or fae veil disturbances, especially in marsh-adjacent threshold zones. When spun above the ground or near water, the humming alters in pitch and rhythm, providing rough proximity estimation to active crossings. - Summoning Device:
Local lore and operative interviews suggest the spindle can be used to summon an entity referred to as “Sir Croakemire” when spun over an open flame, particularly oil or lantern fire. Entity believed to be a watcher-class emissary of the Mirecourt. Summoning results have not been intentionally tested since 1987.
Agent Note — Field Incident File H-Delta-014:
“Our operative disguised as the schoolteacher (Agent Lena H––) noted the sound in her sleep four nights running, despite the item being contained 2 miles away in Vault D. On the fourth night she dreamed of reeds parting and something with a face like a black frog whispering her middle name.”
Containment Protocols:
Housed in an iron-laced, sound-dampened box suspended within an audio-nullification chamber in Vault D. Not to be spun under any circumstance within 1 km of a threshold zone or active flame.
Requests from Dream Unit for acoustic mimicry trials remain under review.
