Subject: Miriam N., Age 16
Location: Aylesford Woods
Summary:
Miriam disappeared after a dispute with her mother and was missing for four days. Upon return, she was found barefoot in her school uniform, but the soles of her feet were cut with thin, mirror-like slices. She had lost the ability to speak but scratched patterns into any soft surface resembling Mistglass Fern fronds.
Statement – Interview Transcript (Dr. Vale):
“When I showed her the fern drawing, she nodded. Then she pointed at her chest and at the drawing again. Then she cried—silent tears—and I swear I heard whispering. But we were alone.”
Field Note:
A patch of actual Mistglass Fern was discovered growing behind her house, where it had never appeared before. It now grows in perfect circles, and birds avoid the area.
Status:
Speech returned six months later. Her first words were: “The trees can lie. The roots cannot.”
