Overview

No eyes. No face. No shape.
Just a hole in the world—and the knowledge that it is looking back.

The Watcher Underneath is not a creature in the traditional sense. It has no form, no predictable movement, and may in fact be the presence that lies beneath all of Mirecourt’s other horrors.

It does not speak. It does not breathe.
It laughs—wet and low, like air escaping from something long drowned.

Appearance

There is nothing to see.

  • A black pit, roughly 1.5 metres wide
  • Surrounded by eel skins, shattered snail shells, and dead insects
  • No moss or plants grow near it. Even the water refuses to pool in its depression
  • Sketches show only shadows, and notes frequently include phrases like: “The birds were silent.”
“My ears bled when I listened too long.”
    “Rain veered away.”

Behaviour and Phenomenon

  • Unseen Influence:
The entity does not manifest visibly, but its presence distorts the environment:
    • Ground softens unnaturally around it—even during droughts
    • All living things avoid the rim; even wind patterns bend away
    • Sound behaves incorrectly—footsteps muffled, voices echoed, laughter from beneath the feet
  • Vibrational Effect:
    Victims report:
    • low-frequency tremors felt in bone, not ears
    • dreams of being buried but aware
    • a sensation of being watched from inside the skull
Some who remain near the site too long develop tinnitus, nosebleeds, or language regression—speaking in dead dialects or reversed syllables.
  • Mental Corruption:
    Prolonged exposure causes:
    • apathy, nihilism, or the belief that something has already happened
    • speech replacement—answering with riddles, swamp dialect, or repeated confessions not their own
    • in extreme cases: sudden catatonia or self-burial behaviour
  • Auditory Manifestation:
The Watcher occasionally releases a deep, wet laugh, often described as:
    • “a heart collapsing underwater”
    • “a coffin being dragged across teeth”
    • “your own voice trying to drown you”

No one who has heard it laughs again.

Documented Manifestation

Cliffe Incident (2018):

A trio of amateur paranormal investigators reported being drawn to a “hollow in the marsh” by a sound they described as ‘watching from inside.’

  • All three were later found:
    • barefoot
    • dazed
    • speaking Middle English from 14th-century Kentish texts
  • One repeated the word “Thirlmere” (meaning “hole” or “perforation”) for six hours.

FDG Site Team confirmed:

  • Soil instability mimicking tectonic activity
  • Nest of eel skins surrounding a perfectly circular depression
  • Electromagnetic readings impossible to stabilize

The pit was deemed uncontainable. Area sealed under guise of wildlife contamination.

Folklore and Signs

  • The Place the Rain Refuses:
Local superstition claims certain spots in the Mirecourt never get wet, even in downpour. These are Watched places.
  • Hole of the Hollow Name:
A suppressed 16th-century sermon refers to “the mouth in the mire, where names go to rot.” Preacher hanged three days later for “grave defilement of the tongue.”
  • The Eel-Born Curse:
If you find a perfect circle of dead eels and do not speak your full name aloud three times, the Watcher will “remember you for longer than you will exist.

Containment Attempts

  • 1999: Stone cairns crumbled.
  • 2005: Iron lattice melted.
  • 2018: Site avoidance ordered. Area misattributed as “invasive bog sinkhole.”

No containment has succeeded. Entity either resists or absorbs intention.

Summary for Field Operatives

TraitDetail
Threat LevelRed-Class (Existential). Contact is mentally and spatially hazardous.
Signs of PresencePerfect depression ring, animal silence, eel skin rings, laughter in mud
Containment RiskMaximum. Entity is non-physical, cognitively invasive, and site-bound.
Engagement AdviceDo not look directly into the pit. Do not approach alone. Do not ask it a question. Carry no names. Bring nothing of sentimental value. If laughter begins, run without speaking.**

Quote from Recovered Audio (Cliffe Field Tape #2):

“It doesn’t have a face. I know because I saw it laughing without one.
It laughed like my father—but from my spine.
And then I remembered things I haven’t done yet.
And they were already too late.”
